Jelle Rietveld(1981, The Netherlands) is a photographer based in Amsterdam. He is an ambitious young talent combining commisioned work for high end fashion brands with editorial pieces and his autonomous body of work. In his autonomous work he is concerned with making choices and selections. Both photographic and very personal choices form the core of his practice. Choosing for him is an unavoidable and often stressful process. The works themselves usually take an abstract turn, focussing on the intricate interplay of light and architectural space and the graphical qualities of naturally occuring shadows. The resulting pieces are analogies of the space he witnessed and his private, emotional state. The final, essential step in his process is rigourous cropping and hours of editing.. His aim is to remove the sense of recognition to allow for a more open, personal interpretation. This interpretation should lead to an extension of the personal world, incorporating his images.
The series Witlicht, made for the White Castle in Loon op Zand is a special series made to support the continuous renovations of this monumental location.
